Traditional Storytelling of Place-Based Foods with Valerie Segrest

Join IATP Food and Community Fellow Valerie Segrest, a native foods educator, community nutritionist and member of the Muckleshoot Tribe, as she shares accounts of Native food traditions and explores ways indigenous perspectives can support positive social change and a more sustainable food system for the future.

For many Native communities, place-based and traditional foods are more than nourishment; they also feed the spirit and are powerful teachers. They represent a living link with the land and embody the resilience of Native communities and the land itself. This perspective differs from one that reduces food to carbohydrates, proteins and fats—or goods to be merely bought and sold. Through sharing the oral history and stories of Native cultural foods we can uncover meaning behind the nutrition labels and nurture opportunities to create deeper connections to our food and the land that sustains us.
