  • The Smart Fish Calculator includes common Minnesota fish species as well as the most popular commercial fish and seafood. "Commercial" means fish you purchase or eat in a restaurant.

How contaminated are fish sticks or "fast food" fish sandwiches?: Generally fish sticks and "fast food" fish sandwiches are made from pollock or cod, which are lower-mercury fish. To calculate a safe consumption level, use the Smart Fish Calculator to search for cod or pollock.

What about shrimp?: One popular seafood not included is shrimp. Although shrimp are low in mercury, they are generally not sustainably harvested or raised. One exception is trap-caught shrimp/prawns, but they are not widely available in Minnesota. For more information on shrimp sustainability see:

How about Great Lakes salmon?: Great Lakes salmon (Chinook, Coho) are also excluded from the Smart Fish Calculator and Guide. For information on consuming these fish, see the Minnesota Department of Health's Web site.
