Access the Eat Well Guide Why use the Eat Well Guide? Healthier Food: Food raised sustainably may be healthier. Fish from the wild, for example, appear higher in healthful omega-3 fats and lower in toxic pollutnats than are farmed fish. Antibiotics: Animals raised on factory farms can be given routine antibiotics, increasing the risk of antibiotic-resistance including that transmitted on the meat. The Eat Well Guide lists operations producing meats with few or no antibiotics. Environment: Sustainable farming means fewer impacts on the broader environment, including fewer chemical contaminants, and less untreated manure waste threatening to overwhelm the absorptive capacity of the land. Sustainability: The concept of sustainability involves eating local, buying food from a farm as close to you as possible. Fresher food has more nutritive value and often tastes better. Food raised close to home also means fewer fossil fuels used in transportation. Community: Sustainable farms are an integral part of the community, where money made on the farm is filtered back into local businesses.
