Local Foods Program Associate

IATP seeks a full-time program associate to develop and implement a range of local food projects in the Upper Midwest. The Program Associate will report to the Director of the Local Foods Program. IATP's Local Foods Program works to build a thriving local food system in the Upper Midwest and will include components focused on strengthening small/medium scale sustainable farming, development of food systems infrastructure and markets, expanding food access, and advancing supportive policy change. The successful candidate will have academic and/or professional experience in food systems development and demonstrate strong analytical, research, writing and inter-personal communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducting research and analysis on local and sustainable food systems issues
  • Coordinating with program partners and community stakeholders to design and implement projects
  • Preparing and writing articles, reports, presentations, proposals and outreach materials
  • Supporting fundraising, communications and program administration

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of and past work experience in local and sustainable food systems
  • Masters degree in agriculture, city and regional planning, economics, public policy or related field
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and issues, work independently and take initiative while meeting agreed upon goals and deadlines
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the region
  • Ability to work as part of a team. Good interpersonal skills and sense of humor a must.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation for this position is based on qualifications and experience. IATP offers excellent health insurance, vacation and sick leave benefits and a lively, creative work environment at our office in Minneapolis, MN.

INTERNSHIPS

Food and Health Program internship

Start date: On or Around June 1st

Duration: Half or Full Time, 3 months

Description: IATP's Food and Health Program seeks a college senior or graduate student intern for approximately three months, beginning on or around June 1, to work with Program staff on a project on the health implications of high-fructose corn syrup in the American diet. The ideal applicant will be available for a half or full-time position, will have science or technical background, and will have superior writing and research skills.

Location: On Site at IATP

Compensation: Unpaid

Local Foods Program Internship

Start date: Early June

Duration: Full time, preferably through August or early September

Description: Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Intern will be part of IATP's Local Foods team. The Internship will focus on: Researching and writing a set of case studies for national distribution that illustrate how faith-based communities can engage in local food and healthy eating projects Supporting evaluation and implementation of "mini-farmers markets" at locations throughout Minneapolis that bring fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables to low-income neighborhoods that have very limited access to healthy foods. Participate in other local foods research and project activities as needed.

Experience and qualifications

  • Recent college graduate or student entering senior year
  • Academic and practical field experience in food system issues, preferably including community-based, local food projects
  • Knowledge of faith-based communities in Minnesota a plus
  • Excellent analytical, writing and inter-personal skills

Location: On-site at IATP office. Intern must have own vehicle to conduct site visits within the Metro area.

Food and Health Program internship

Start date: On or Around June 1st

Duration: Half or Full Time, for at least 8 weeks

Description: IATP's Food and Health Program seeks a 2nd or 3rd year law student intern to work with the Program's scientific staff on several issues pertaining to food contaminants. The legal intern will gain excellent experience drafting and revising citizen petitions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as working with other NGOs including environmental law firms to gain their signature on the petitions as well.

Experience and qualifications

  • 2nd or 3rd year law student
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Interest in environment, health, and nutrition issues

Location: On Site at IATP

Compensation: Unpaid, although some small stipend may be available for qualified candidates

Deadline: May 20
