Farm and Food Policy Summer Intern


Responsibilities

The intern will assist IATP's Farm and Food Policy Director on a concept paper outlining policy options and a potential alliance between public health and sustainable agriculture stakeholders in the 2012 Farm Bill. Activities will include: reviewing stakeholder materials, relevant journal articles and commentary, and the 2008 Farm Bill to identify potential policy options; mapping out stakeholder organizations; assisting with writing and presentation development.

Qualifications

Prefer current graduate student in public health and/or public policy; self-starter with excellent research, organizational, and writing skills.

Additional Information

Start date: Late May/early June 2010
Duration/hours: Flexible, at least 8 hours a week through the summer.
Compensation: Unpaid
Location: Primarily on-site at IATP's office in Minneapolis, but with off-site options available.

Rural Communities: Sustainable Bioplastics Intern


Responsibilities

Work with Rural Communities Program staff to research what types of crops and plants (including trees) are being used to make bioplastics, and to help identify what sustainability tools are available to help improve the environmental, economic and community benefits from producing these crops. Other research and writing work on sustainable bioplastics may also be included in the intern's work plan.

Qualifications
  • Working understanding of sustainable agriculture/forestry practices
  • Demonstrated thorough research skills
  • Good writing ability
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Able to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience with MS Office

Healthy Legacy Intern

Healthy Legacy is a 32 member public health coalition dedicated to "safe products, made safely."

Responsibilities

This intern position will assist the Healthy Legacy Co-Director in planning and developing initiatives for the MN Business-NGO Work Group on Green Chemistry, including: helping with meeting and event planning; assisting with Fall Conference planning; research on green chemistry and green business practices; as well as coalition outreach on business issues. The intern will also attend Healthy Legacy coalition and various green economy events.

Qualifications

Prefer graduate level student or equivalent experience; self-starter with excellent communication and organizational skills; business experience a plus.

Start date: Spring or early Summer 2010
Duration / hours: Three months, 10-20 hours per week.
Compensation: Unpaid
Location: Primarily on-site at IATP's office in Minneapolis.

Event Coordination and Outreach Internship

The Rural Communities program at IATP is seeking a capable, reliable and enthusiastic intern to assist with the coordination of the 2nd Midwest Rural Assembly, a two-day conference to be held in the Sioux City, IA area on August 16-17, 2009. The intern will work directly with the IATP planning committee and have the opportunity to engage in a variety of event coordination duties. In addition, this internship will provide the opportunity to learn about a number of important rural issues and interact with a variety of rural community leaders and decision makers. Responsibilities
  • Managing, tracking and formatting registration/participant lists
  • Marketing and outreach assistance, including:
    • Web and phone-based research to find organizations and/or individuals that may be interested in the conference
    • Sending mass emails and assisting with paper mailings
  • Day-of coordination and assistance, including:
    • Staffing the registration table
    • Note-taking for a selection of conference presentations and breakout sessions
    • Microphone runner for audience questions
    • Managing conference materials and supplies
  • Other duties may include:
    • Conference materials and supplies preparation
    • Conference call attendance and note-taking
    • Fundraising support through phone calls and emails to potential sponsors
    • Possible assistance with social media leading up to and during conference
    • Other conference logistics support as needed
Qualifications
  • Experience with MS Office Excel and Word required, specifically managing spreadsheets with large amounts of information; mail merge experience preferred
  • Desire to gain skills in implementing large conferences; building on previous event coordination experience preferred
  • Commitment to revitalization, development and sustainability of rural communities preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Thoroughness in conducting web and phone-based research
  • Flexible and able to accomplish a variety of tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to take clear, detailed notes
  • Strong attention to detail
Additional Information
Duration / hours
  • Variable 8-12 hours/week (more hours in week before conference to be expected)
  • Preference will be given to applicants who can start mid-May with availability through end of August to assist with conference wrap-up
  • MUST be able to attend the conference (in Sioux City, IA area), leaving Minneapolis the morning of Sunday, August 15, and returning to Minneapolis the evening of Tuesday, August 17.
Compensation

Unpaid; transportation, lodging and meals for conference attendance will be provided.

Location

Most work will be done on-site at IATP's office in Minneapolis. Some off-site work can be negotiated.
