Director, International Program

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), founded in 1986 and governed by an international board of directors, works to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems, locally and globally. IATP has offices in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Geneva, Switzerland. Work responsibilities will be divided between Geneva, Washington D.C., New York and Minneapolis, and the position will be based in one of those locations.

IATP seeks a full-time program director for its International Program, which is engaged in advocacy to promote fairer and more sustainable food, agriculture and global governance systems at the global level. The program leads global-level debates on the governance of food and agriculture with public officials and civil society groups, and promotes positive U.S. engagement in the world on these issues. The program director reports to the Vice President for Programs in Minneapolis, and oversees staff in Geneva and Minneapolis. Substantial travel required.

The successful candidate will have leadership experience, excellent communications skills, familiarity with global institutions and networks, an understanding of food and agriculture and trade issues, and a solid background in U.S. and international policy.

Responsibilities include developing strategy; representing the program and IATP to the public; directing and contributing to the intellectual work of the program; fundraising; and hiring and supervising staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and skills
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience and ability
  • Extensive experience working in international public policy, with preference for candidates with background in two or more of the following: agriculture, trade, investment, climate and human rights
  • Understanding of and familiarity with multilateral institutions
  • Support for IATP perspectives and advocacy on these issue areas
  • Experience working with different types of civil society organizations in an international context
  • Understanding of U.S. foreign policy
  • Excellent English language communication skills (written and oral), and at least one other language (Spanish and/or French preferred)
  • Graduate degree in relevant field

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. IATP offers excellent health insurance, vacation and sick leave benefits, and a lively, collegial work environment.

Rural Communities: Biofuels Database Intern

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Rural Communities Program at IATP is seeking a data-minded intern to play a central role in the development of an innovative biofuels database.

The intern will work with program staff to research and compile production and ownership data for the U.S. biofuels industry. The goal of this exciting project is to make crucial but currently hard-to-find information on U.S. biofuels production and ownership trends easily available to researchers, journalists and the general public.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Surveying ethanol producers by mail and phone
  • Online research
  • Data entry

Experience and Qualifications

  • Interest in and knowledge of biofuels
  • Data-minded individual with strong attention to detail
  • Experience with MS Office suite required, specifically managing spreadsheets and/or databases with large amounts of information
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and responsibly

Start date: As soon as possible
Duration / hours: 3 months, part-time, flexible hours
Compensation: unpaid
Location: on-site or off-site with bi-weekly check-in meetings

Rural Communities: Midwest Rural Assembly Intern

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Rural Communities program at IATP is seeking a capable and enthusiastic intern to assist with the coordination of the first Midwest Rural Assembly, a two-day conference to be held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on August 10-11, 2009.

The intern will work directly with the IATP planning committee and will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of event coordination duties, primarily assisting with managing and tracking the registration system and handling participant lists.

Other duties may include (but are not limited to):

  • Marketing and outreach assistance
  • Materials preparation
  • Support of program logistics
  • Organizing conference calls
  • Management of supplies
  • Day-of coordination

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience with MS Office suite required, specifically managing spreadsheets and/or databases with large amounts of information
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and responsibly
  • Flexible and able to accomplish a variety of tasks in a timely manner
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Desire to gain experience in implementing large conferences; building on previous event coordination experience preferred
  • Commitment to revitalization, development and sustainability of rural communities preferred
  • College students welcome

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Start date: As soon as possible
Duration / hours: 8-12 hours/week until August 14.
MUST be able to attend conference in Sioux Falls on August 10-11 (transportation, lodging and food will be provided).
Compensation: unpaid
Location: On site at IATP's Minneapolis office.
