    In April, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development will meet in Ghana. IATP's Anne Laure Constantin writes on the potential for UNCTAD to set a new course for development.

    IATP's Trade and Global Governance Program Prepares for UNCTAD XII
    The Institute’s Trade and Global Governance team will be represented at the UNCTAD meeting in Ghana by Alexandra Spieldoch and Anne Laure Constantin from April 17 to 24.

    While in Accra, IATP will be engaging in dialogues with civil society and government representatives over:

    • The implications of high commodity prices and their relation to the call for market regulation;
    • The implementation experience of three decades of agriculture trade liberalization and UNCTAD’s role in promoting alternative policies;
    • Proposals for alternative international agricultural trade rules to make agriculture and food systems sustainable; and
    • The impact of agriculture trade liberalization on gender inequalities.

    UNCTAD XI was held in São Paulo, Brazil, June 11-17, 2004. IATP co-hosted a Fair Trade Fair during the summit.

    Civil society organizations campaigned for an end to agricultural dumping and other fair trade policies, with an emphasis on a new set of rules making agriculture an engine of development.
