The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a full-time Trade Policy Analyst in our Washington, D.C. or Minneapolis, Minnesota office.

IATP is a nonprofit think tank and policy advocacy organization with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We have a 35-year history of pursuing just and resilient food and agriculture policies that benefit family farmers, food and agriculture workers, rural communities and the planet. Our team of 16 staff work locally, nationally and globally. We match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring good policy into practice. In addition to Minneapolis, we have small offices in Washington, D.C. and Berlin, Germany.

IATP envisions agriculture, trade, and food systems that are good for people, farmers and food system workers, ecosystems and social justice globally. Growing these systems requires a long-term, sustained effort to build and mobilize broad public interest in vigorous political engagement and democratic decision-making, coupled with effective implementation systems.

Purpose:

The Policy Analyst for Trade and Global Governance will work with the Program Director and other IATP staff to develop clear and compelling analysis of trade policies and negotiations, as well as sound alternative proposals that advance economic and climate justice.

IATP program staff work in partnership with farm justice and climate-focused organizations in local, national and international settings in networks and coalitions to develop effective policy strategies and public education tools. The position will include policy advocacy with decision-makers, legislators, journalists and the wider public.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze public policies and negotiating proposals on trade, agriculture and climate change and write accessible materials targeted to relevant audiences.
  • Actively engage with partners in the Global North and South to develop strategies for trade, climate and farm justice.
  • Advocate with policymakers on specific policies and new directions.
  • Represent IATP in public forums in the U.S. and globally.
  • Serve as expert source for media outlets and the philanthropic community.
  • Write funding reports and proposals.

Qualities and Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission and values of IATP.
  • Demonstrated expertise in trade, environmental or human rights law.
  • Minimum five years of experience working on trade policy to advance social, environmental and/or economic justice.
  • Experience working within coalitions or networks.
  • Comfortable in intercultural contexts.
  • Understand how to use statistical and other data sources to support analysis.
  • Excellent writing, oral and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Committed to working within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Abundance of creativity and enthusiasm.
  • Proficiency in English is required. Additionally, competency in Spanish, Portuguese, French or other relevant languages would be highly valued.
  • Ability to live and work in the United States.
  • The position will ideally be based in Washington, D.C. or Minneapolis and follow a flexible hybrid schedule.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally 2-4 times per year.

Benefits and Compensation:

Compensation for this position is based upon location, qualifications and experience, with a starting annual salary of $65,000- $75,000. IATP offers excellent health insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA), paid vacation and holidays, sick leave, 403B retirement plan with employer match, employer paid life, AD&D and LTD insurance, and optional employer paid mobile phone plan.
