COLOMBO, April 10 (AFP) - Sri Lanka has imposed a ban on genetically
modified food pending more research on their effects on humans, a government
official said Monday.
The ban on genetically modified food went into effect from February 9 amid a
debate in the West about the desirability of consuming such food, a health
ministry official said.
However, Sri Lanka will depend on certificates issued by food importers to
impose the ban in the absence of sophisticated techniques to test
gene-modified (GM) food.
GM food is not produced in the island which imports large amounts of wheat
and sugar.
