Food Guide Pyramid for Children

Go Glow Grow: Foods for You

Subjects addressed: Math, science, health

Objectives: Students will be able to measure quantities of food items

Students will improve in categorizing foods into the correct group

Students will be able to tell what each level of the Pyramid does for their growth and development

Content: Facilitator will administer the pre-evaluation test to the class. Facilitator will sing theme song round, "Glow, Go, Grow," with children. Children will be divided into two groups to begin making parfaits. The recipe for up to 30 children is as follows: ½ cup of yogurt, 2 TB of fruit, 2 TB of granola. Children will return to large group. Facilitator will read Go Glow Grow: Foods for You to the children as they eat parfaits. Facilitator will emphasize the food groups that each recipe item comes from and engage children in discussion. Session will end with theme song. Facilitator will administer post-evaluation test to class. Facilitator will introduce next lesson: Class Pyramid. Children will be instructed to begin clipping food pictures from magazines and other print media in preparation for Lesson Two as detailed in the lesson plan.

Suggested follow-up: Children can begin collecting items for the Class Pyramid

for Lesson Two. Between Lessons One and Two, children will be asked to bring clippings of foods from various print media (i.e. newspapers, magazines, etc.). Students will group these pictures by food category into labeled grocery bags until Lesson 2. Teachers should quiz children about Food Groups as they categorize the pictures in preparation for the next lesson.
