How New Free Trade Agreements Would Undermine Food Safety

The pending free trade agreements, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP) and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), are designed to ensure that food safety regulations do not impede trade. Under both trade agreements, food safety standards that offer a greater level of consumer protection than international standards, even if they conform to the WTO food safety agreement, could be judged to be illegal trade barriers.
