For decades, rural communities and family farm organizations across North America have stood against corporate agribusiness-friendly regional trade deals, such as the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA in 2020, was touted by all three governments as a fundamental shift from the status quo trade agenda of the past. But for most working rural families in North America, these promises of revitalization for the agricultural sector have fallen far short.
In 2025, the legally mandated six-year review of USMCA was initiated by all three governments in North America to determine what, if any, policy changes in USMCA could be negotiated, or whether the trade framework would collapse. Meanwhile, trade policy in the region (and globally) has been upended in recent years as the U.S. government has utilized trade tariffs in new, chaotic, and legally-contested ways as a negotiation tactic with traditional trade allies and adversaries. The impacts of this trade policy landscape has been particularly tumultuous in North America, given the increasingly trans-territorial supply chains across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with significant impacts on, and uncertainty for, rural communities.
As the official review of USMCA continues, the purpose of this webinar is to provide a forum for civil society organizations, representing family farmers, rural communities, farmworkers, and peasants, from all three countries to provide insights on the impacts of USMCA, hear their key policy demands for reforms to the trade agreement, and build solidarity around shared visions for trade justice for the food and agriculture sector in North America.
