TITLE: Assistant Steward
LOCATION: Nachusa Grasslands (Near Dixon, Illinois)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the supervision of the Nachusa Grasslands Project Director and Restoration Ecologist, six assistant stewards are needed for prairie and savanna management and restoration at Nachusa Grasslands, a 1,500 acre preserve near Dixon, IL. Stewards will assist with weed management by using backpack herbicide sprayers, mowers and hand tools. They will also assist with general maintenance and seed collection. Interesting, educational, and challenging outside work at a dynamic project.
Applicants should have a commitment to conservation, recent course work in ecology or experience with natural area restoration. A bachelors degree in resource management, ecology or natural sciences is preferred.
A great way to learn natural areas management. Full-time, Short term position from early June to late October; $8.00/Hour. Includes on site housing.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
* Experience or ability to safely use basic maintenance tools,
including lawn mower and chainsaw.
* Ability to follow instructions
* Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse
conditions or in inclement weather.
COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
* Consults with supervisor to resolve any problems or questions.
DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
* Consults with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance,
problem or question that falls outside of specific instructions given.
RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
* Supervises no staff; no financial responsibility.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
* May have occasional contact with members of the public visiting
the preserve.
* Ability to interact with preserve visitors and to convey basic
preserve information.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
* Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors,
in all weather conditions and on difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain.
* Work requires extreme physical exertion and/or physical strain
to the point of physical fatigue. Work environment involves exposure to job hazard's where there is a high possibility of injury.
