The American Crop Protection Association (ACPA; Washington), which represents makers of pesticides and genetically modified (GM) seeds, says it will change its name on January 1 to CropLife America.

The change reflects the growing influence of biotechnology in agriculture, says ACPA. The group has stepped up lobbying efforts on GM crop regulations in recent years. ACPA members include DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta. ACPA changed its name in 1994 from the National Agricultural Chemicals Association.

The name change follows a similar decision by the Global Crop Protection Federation (Brussels), which became CropLife International (CLI) in June. ACPA is the largest member of CLI.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (Washington) also lobbies for GM seed companies, but represents all biotechnology industry applications, including developments for pharmaceuticals.
