COLOMBO (Lankapuvath) -- Sri Lanka's Food Advisory Committee has, according to a Senior Health Ministry Official cited in this story, issued instructions to all relevant authorities including the Sri Lanka Customs to prevent the imports of genetically modified foods.
The Health Ministry and the Food Advisory Committee will take measures to avoid health risks associated with genetic modifications. The Ministry of Commerce and Food Sources said that it is not so profitable to import genetically modified food items to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is not engaged in the production of such food items. However the country imports a large quantity of wheat and sugar.
