President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's office said Friday that he is likely to meet President Fidel Castro, if the Cuban leader visits Brazil next week.

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is to meet Tuesday in Sao Paulo, but because Castro does not announce his travel plans in advance, the 12:10 pm (1510 GMT) meeting with Lula has not been confirmed.

Lula is to attend the inauguration of UNCTAD's morning meeting Monday and in the afternoon meet with Presidents Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Nicanor Duarte of Paraguay, Carlos Mesa of Bolivia, Jorge Batlle of Uruguay and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

On Tuesday, before the likely meeting with Castro, Lula will receive president-elect of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez and the head of state of Uganda, Yoweri Koguta Museveni.Agence France Presse:
