In September 2000, family farmers learned that StarLink corn, a genetically modified Bt feed corn invented by Aventis Crop-Science in France and sold in the US by various seed companies, had contaminated a variety of human food products.
Because federal agencies in the United States had not approved StarLink for human consumption, the contaminated products were ordered recalled and the USDA began working with Aventis to buy-back from family farmers all the StarLink corn they had in their fields or in their bins.
These developments raise many questions about the regulation and control of genetically modified food products in the United States. The way it looks today, many family farmers could be hurt by these developments. Farm Aid would like to hear about your first-hand experiences with StarLink, the USDA and the buy-back program. You can help assess how much damage has been done in farm country by filling out this questionnaire.:
