KYOTO, Japan - The Nihon Keizai Shimbun was cited as reporting in its Friday morning edition that Takara Shuzo Co. and Mitsubishi Corp. will start a service measuring exactly how much genetically modified organisms are contained in imported soybeans and other foods from Dec. 1.
A joint venture set up by the two companies in September will conduct the tests and determine the proportion of GM organisms in samples to an accuracy of 0.01%, company officials were quoted as saying Thursday.
The service won't initially provide certification for GM-free products because the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has yet to decide standards for GM products.
Fees will be Y90,000 per specimen and test results will be available within a week.
