Labour MP Stephen Ladyman (Thanet S) was cited as today lambasting
parliamentary colleagues for their ignorance and fear of science and urged
the Government to make more time for Commons debate on technological change,
adding, "One of the things I have found most disappointing since becoming an
MP is that many Members don't respond with inspiration and hope to
scientific advances, but with fear and loathing - often built out of
incomprehension. If we are going to capitalise in advances in biotechnology
and build on our incredibly successful pharmaceutical industries, I think
better understanding is needed in the House."
Leader of the House Margaret Beckett a metallurgist, was cited as saying it
was "not easy" to set parliamentary time aside to consider such matters,
adding, "I share your view that, as you know, it is a very important
subject."
