In association with Clark Forestry, Inc. of Baraboo, WI, Native Thumb Environmental Consulting will likely be hiring one or two field botanists for rare plants surveys in national forests in the upper Midwest.

The positions will be dependent on our obtaining federal bids. Last year, we received bids for work that took the majority of the summer season. We expect to be successful again in the bidding process, but it is not a guarantee and you should have a backup employment plan in mind. If bids are accepted, work will start in mid-May and run until late August, and will be intermittent, with several weeks of free time during which you are expected to return home.

Qualifications
You must be able to identify the majority of vascular plants in the field native to the upper Midwest and have some academic training in botany. Plants we will be searching for include grasses, sedges and small ferns that are difficult to identify.

You must also be able to walk all day, sometimes 12-13 hours in the field, in occasionally challenging field conditions dealing with heavy brush, heat, rain, insects, wetlands, and bogs. Your reward for this is seeing interesting wildlife, some of the nicest scenery the Midwest has to offer, as well as the joys of finding some rare plants.

You must be a very organized person, as there is considerable record keeping, map and photo organizing involved. You also should be easy to live with, as you will be spending large amounts of time with your field companions.

Compensation is excellent and paid by the day. Transportation and lodging are provided.
