WASHINGTON - The announcement that a case of mad cow disease has been found in a cow in Alberta has triggered a ban on beef exports to the United States.

The U.S. Agriculture Department imposed a temporary ban on beef imports from Canada on Tuesday.

The announcement came as Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief was holding a news conference in Alberta to discuss the case. Vanclief indicated he had been told such an action was possible.

"If they've temporarily banned it that means the shipment of beef from Canada to the United States is stopped," he said.

A single cow that was slaughtered in Alberta in January was found to have bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).CBC News:
