The Executive Secretary has prepared the present note to assist the Ad Hoc Open-ended Inter-Sessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity in preparing the advice on the application and development of legal and other forms of protection for the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities requested by the Conference of the Parties in paragraph 1 (a) of its decision IV/9.
