The Subcommittee on Basic Research conducted a series of public hearings during the First Session of the 106th Congress in which leading scientists were given the opportunity to assess these controversies. This Report is based on the testimony and other documents made available to the Subcommittee over the course of those hearings. It provides a brief history of agricultural biotechnology and its oversight, a discussion of findings concerning the benefits, safety, and environmental impact of agricultural plants modified using biotechnology, and a list of recommendations.
