June 6, 2002 * FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Summit Brewing Company today joined a growing list of Minnesota companies and citizens who are harnessing the power of the marketplace to bring logging practices in line with the public's demand for a healthy environment. Summit Brewing has chosen to use wooden pallets made exclusively from wood certified as meeting Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification standards. FSC certification is a promise - verified by respected, independent, third-party environmental auditors - that timber management practices on the certified lands satisfy meaningful environmental standards designed to protect forests, lakes, rivers, soils, and wildlife. Wood products produced from FSC-certified lands bear the FSC's distinctive "checkmark-and-tree" symbol. Summit Brewing Company - in committing to use only FSC-certified wood products in its shipping pallets - has shown that it is a responsible corporate citizen and a good friend to Minnesota's environment.

The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy (MCEA) - a non-profit environmental group with a long history of using science, law, and research to protect Minnesota's forests, praised Summit Brewing Company for its actions. "MCEA strongly supports companies that choose FSC-certified forest products," said Matt Norton, MCEA's Forest Advocate. "FSC standards are ecologically sound, and compliance is double-checked by independent auditors whose loyalty is to the environment. Also, FSC certification builds a greener economy by rewarding certified landowners and the companies - like Summit Brewing Company and the maker of FSC-certified pallets - that demand certified wood products. The rewards come when other businesses and the general public vote with their checkbooks. MCEA encourages consumers to follow Summit Brewing Company's lead: show your environmental colors by choosing brands that insist on FSC-certified wood."
