The Kickapoo Woods Cooperative will hold a session on March 19 and discuss what different logs are worth. The event will take place from 10:00 am until noon at the White City Lumber Company about halfway between La Farge and Hillsboro on Highway 82. Mike Hynek, owner and timber buyer of the lumber company and Paul Bader, management coordinator of the co-op will lead the discussion. Hardwood logs of different species and quality will be examined and various features pointed out that contribute to or detract from their value.

What a log buyers look for to determine the value of each log is its species, grade (quality), scale (volume) and location. Defects found in most logs will ether lower its grade, scale or both. Weather the logs are purchased standing in the woods, found on a landing or delivered to the mill the harvesting conditions and transportation are important factors in determining value. These and other factors determining the market value of logs will be discussed and your questions welcomed.

This promises to be an interesting and practical workshop. All are welcome. The Woods Co-op will provide light refreshments and coffee.

The Kickapoo Woods Cooperatives mission is to provide forestry education, management and marketing services to landowners of the Kickapoo valley and neighboring watersheds that will improve the forestry resource in the region. KWC is accepting new members and can help them to develop Forest Management Plans.
