Italian retailers are embracing FSC as an important tool to market forest products from responsible forest operations.

Castorama Italy, part of the Kingfisher Group, has undertaken a series of activities to increase awareness of its FSC-certified products and to recognize FSC as a solution to combat illegal logging and support sustainable harvesting of the world's forests through identifying responsibly managed forest products.

To effectively carry out these marketing activities and demonstrate its commitment to the FSC system, the largest Italian retailer has become the first retail member of the FSC Italy Working Group. In line with the Kingfisher Group policy to support sustainable development, Castorama Italy has also speci - fied its preference for FSC-certified products in its purchasing policy.

Other initiatives carried out by Castorama Italy include conducting staff training on the FSC system and disseminating information about FSC through its catalogue and its chain of 22 stores and a partnership project with Greenpeace Italy to promote public awareness of illegal logging through in-store video and radio.

Liviu Amariei, director of FSC Europe Region commented, "The uptake of FSC at Castorama Italy is an example of how the joint efforts and collaboration between different actors in the FSC network, in this case FSC Italy, FSC Europe, Greenpeace Italy, and Castorama Italy can create momentum for an improved uptake of FSC products and services at retailer level. On the other hand, it is also a visible proof of the quality of FSC's services and its leadership in the world's market for forest product certification."
