HONG KONG -- Activists from environmental group Greenpeace were cited as
staging a protest march Thursday, pressing the government to set up a
labelling system for genetically-engineered (GE) foods in Hong Kong. The
story says that the activists, dressed in white overalls and with white
painted faces, marched through the tourist-belt of Tsim Sha Tsui, demanding
a GE food labelling system in Hong Kong. Government officials attending a GE
forum were presented with 18,000 signatures underlining public support.
Lo Sze-ping, Greenpeace China campaigner, was quoted as saying, "The reality
is that the public do not want GE foods, and if there are GE foods they
demand them to be labelled. The government cannot delay this inevitable
process any longer. We don't want any more technical excuses to stand in the
way. Labelling can be done and should be done without further delays."
