A young farmer's wife has, according to this story, written an impassioned plea to Tony Blair asking him to make Britain a GM-free country and "give rural citizens back their morale".

In a letter to 10 Downing Street Sarah Eddy, 27, who gave birth to her first son Thomas four months ago, congratulated the Prime Minister on the arrival of his baby son Leo.

But she expressed outrage that genetically modified oilseed rape had been accidentally brought to Britain and told Mr Blair she didn't want her son to grow up eating GM grain.

The story says that Mrs Eddy and her husband William farm a herd of Jersey cows on 80 acres near Penzance, Cornwall, where her family has worked the land for three generations.
