Marita Wiggerthale
Marita Wiggerthale works as policy advisor for the Greens in the German parliament on food and agriculture. Before she worked for many years for Oxfam Germany on global food policy and agriculture. Her research, advocacy, and campaign activities related to issues ranging from agricultural trade, the European agricultural policy, the right to food, food speculation, agroecology, unfair trading practices in food retail, corporate power and fair food prices. She co-founded and coordinated in Germany civil society coalitions on EU agricultural subsidies, market power of supermarket chains and corporate power. Her knowledge was appreciated by media and policy makers. She participated on several occasions as an expert in hearings in the Bundestag.
Marita grew up and worked on a farm in Lower Saxony in Germany. After working for years as physical therapist, she studied and completed her master's degree in politics, economics, and education. Her masters study was dedicated to EU agri-environmental policy within the limits of the World Trade Organization. After her studies Marita served as secretary general of the International Catholic Rural Youth Movement based in Brussels and then worked for two years at Germanwatch as policy advisor on agricultural trade policy.
