IATP Europe submitted the following comments on December 18, 2025 to the research consortium, mandated by the European Commission, regarding the development of pilot methodologies for the certification of livestock credits under the European Union’s (EU) Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF).
In 2024, the EU agreed on its Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) that sets out rules to generate carbon credits from a diverse set of activities, including from agriculture. While the original scope of the CRCF covered carbon sequestration and emission reductions on agriculturally used soils, the framework also included a 2026 legislative review that requires EU policymakers to decide if the framework should be expanded to allow for the generation of carbon credits from livestock-related activities.
This review included the development of pilot methodologies for such activities. The following comment was submitted with regard to the draft pilot livestock methodologies, as well as the decision on their future inclusion in the certification framework.
