The European Commission is exploring whether and how to price greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its agrifood sector, looking for policy options to help bring down the sector’s stagnating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Three policy options have emerged from Commission-mandated research and ongoing discussions with experts and stakeholders:
- Public procurement of carbon credits and voluntary carbon trading
- Mandatory emissions trading for meat and dairy processors or farmers
- Mandatory climate targets for meat and dairy processors or retailers
This guide unpacks each of those proposals and assesses their potential impact on the climate and farmers.
