Several seemingly disparate issues have motivated this session on competition policy and agricultural trade. They include state trading, labels of origin and the relationships between trade, foreign direct investment and global competitiveness. Each of these issues raises concerns related to a broader question on whether the next round of GATT negotiations should address competition policy as well as how agricultural trade issues may impact those negotiations.
