KAW comments to EPA regarding the use of the antibiotic gentamicin in apples. In contrast to the toxicological safety assessment, the resistance risk assessment is based on unsupported assumptions and contained significant methodological errors. Allowing the nontherapeutic use of gentamicin on 26,600 acres of apples without an adequate assessment of the risk to public health is unacceptable.

KAW's  letter to the Senate on needed changes to the Animal Drug User Fee Act (ADUFA), specifically urging that when its passed when it is passed, include provisions from Title 1 and Title 2 of the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA, S. 549) to address the ongoing resistance issues associated with approved antibiotics.  
The reckless use in animals of tried-and-true human antibiotics has contributed to the development of serious antibiotic-resistant human disease. The most straightforward way to address resistant diseases such as CA-MRSA is to curb unnecessary use of all antibiotics important to human medicine in U.S. livestock operations, including penicillin and tetracycline.
