This article was published in Third World Resurgence, Issue No. 129-130, 2002. The EPA, despite having done only limited testing at that time, was prepared to approve the release of a genetically engineered bacteria designed to convert crop waste into alcohol. It never occurred to the EPA to test for what would happen to plants growing in soil treated with this new GE bacteria because that was not a requirement for the release of new genetically modified organisms.
