China is cultivating oil-bearing crops on 400,000 hectares (988,421 acres) of land, with the aim of increasing the country's bio-energy forest coverage to 13 million hectares (32 million acres) by 2020, according to Xinhua News Agency. Oil-bearing plants, including pistacia chinensis bunge, jatropha, cornus wisoniana and xanthoceras sorbifolia, will be grown on designated forest areas across Hebei, Anhui, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shanxi provinces and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
China has been raising oil-bearing trees on some 4 million hectares (10 million acres) of land in different regions with an expected fruit output of 4 million tons (3.6 million tonnes). More could be planted on 57 million hectares (141 million acres) of what is now underdeveloped wilderness, Head of the State Forestry Administration Jia Zhibang said.
China is aiming to increase its biodiesel output to 200,000 tons (181,488 tonnes) by 2010 and 2 million tons (1.8 million tonnes) by 2010, according to officials.
